Estates
The three estates of
Propietat d’Espiells

Propietat d’Espiells devotes a large proportion of its resources to improving and caring for its vineyards – Espiells, La Cuscona and Mediona – so that each grape variety can achieve the highest levels of balance and development.

Our 271 hectares of organic vines are contained in these three Alt Penedès landscapes. The size of the vineyards is no obstacle to harvesting the grapes by hand and transporting them quickly to the winery. Each vineyard plays a very important part of the making of Propietat d’Espiells’ products. Caring for them is delicate work based on commitment and the need to ensure precise, high-quality organic vinegrowing.

Each Propietat d’Espiells wine is a story, a landscape and a small part of the history of the family. They are clean, elegant Mediterranean wines expressing the soul of their origin.

Espiells: the origin of Propietat d'Espiells

Espiells is the largest of the property’s farms, with 200 hectares of vineyards in one of the most renowned wine quality areas of the Alt Penedès, on the lap of Montserrat. Old vines, loaded with history, preside over this beautiful enclave of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia. They are vineyards planted in poor, well drained soils, of clay-calcareous lands, between 180 and 245 meters above sea level.

Espiells adds the properties of Casa Vella, Can Torres and Can Rius. A total of 184 hectares in privileged conditions with a Mediterranean microclimate, protected from the cold winds of the north by the mountain of Montserrat. It is a landscape of extraordinary beauty, optimal for the cultivation of the traditional Macabeo and Xarel·lo varieties, and to which the noble Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have also been adapted. Parellada, Alexandria muscat, Viognier, Sitges Malvasia, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also grown.

Within the framework of the Espiells estate there is also the privileged plot ‘La Capella’, of 7.2 hectares, where the product with the highest distinction of Juvé & Camps, the cava that bears the same name, certified as ‘Qualified Place Cava’ by the Cava Regulatory Council.

La Cuscona:
a paradise for the macabeu

Located 220 meters above sea level, south of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia and in the middle of the central plain of Penedès, the 17 hectares of La Cuscona farm are ideal for the cultivation of the traditional white Macabeu variety (viura). This is so thanks to its good orientation and the condition of the soils, deep and calcareous. An artisan viticulture, of low production, allows to obtain grapes of the Macabeu variety of extraordinary quality, great aromatic richness, full of nuances, and balanced structure.

Mediona:
the highest end

The last fincas that were incorporated into the family’s patrimony are those of Can Massana, Alzinetes, El Prat, Mas Pagès and Can Soler, all of them located in the highlands of Mediona, between 500 and 750 meters above sea level. The edaphological characteristics of the area, and the large temperature fluctuations between day and night, are especially indicated in this area for the cultivation of the parellada and the red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

Parellada strains, some very old and planted on stony soils, allow this variety to achieve remarkable fineness and balance. In the farms of Mediona, white grapes of the chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and gewürztraminer varieties are also grown.
